Welcome to NUS High School of Mathematics and Science.
When I first became an educator, I had hopes of moulding the future generations of our society, shaping them into lifelong learners with inquiring minds.
Today, my dream is still very much alive as I stand at the helm of this specialised high school, an institution which envisions herself as the wellspring of inspiration for Math and Science education and research, the former providing the bedrock of knowledge upon which the latter is built.
Indeed, NUS High School has been fertile ground for research in Math and Science. I take pride in the fact that numerous students from our school have presented their research projects at local and overseas conferences, and that our school is the cradle of the first local annual high school research congress. A number of our students have even co-published books based on their research work!
A research culture can only thrive in the presence of a strong spirit of inquiry, and I am always heartened when our students are spurred to learn beyond their textbooks and inspired to venture where their journey of inquiry takes them.
That said, while Math and Science education and research is the highlight of the students’ learning journey here in our school, the importance of having a well-rounded education cannot be underscored enough in this day and age.
In fact, we make nurturing well-rounded and world-ready scientific minds our core business and mission, one we achieve through providing a wide range of subjects in our curriculum (including those in the languages, humanities, music and the arts) and an array of co-curricular activities (ranging from sports and uniformed groups to clubs and societies as well as performing arts groups). We also have in place an Affective Character Education Programme to equip students with social-emotional competencies that would stand them in good stead to make distinguished contributions to society in future.
Each day, my convictions are reaffirmed, as I witness the growth and development of our students, who are slowly but surely becoming the Pioneers, Achievers, Thinkers and Humanitarians we want them to be.
