Admission & Application Matters

 

       1.     How many application phases are there per year?

There are 2 phases for year 1 admission in 2009:
Phase 1 -  3 Apr to 29 Jun 2009
Phase 2  - 26  Nov 2009 1100hr to 2 Dec 2009 1500hr

 

There is only 1 phase for year 3 admissions in 2009:
3 Apr to 29 June 2009

 

      2.    How old must an applicant be to qualify for admission?

For admission to Year 1 at NUS High School, local students in the Singapore school system must currently be reading Primary Six education. Foreign students must either be currently reading or have completed Primary Six education in Singapore (or its equivalent). In addition, applicant should not be older than 15 years of age as of 1 Jan 2010. 

 

For admission to Year 3 at NUS High School, local students in the Singapore school system must currently be reading Secondary Two education. Foreign students must either be currently reading or have completed Secondary Two education in Singapore (or its equivalent).In addition, applicant should not be older than 17 years of age as of 1 Jan 2010.

 

     3.     What if I do not have internet access for online application?

For DSA Phase 1 (both year 1 and year 3), there are 2 options available to you if you do not have access to the internet:

 

      - You may fill up a hardcopy of the application form and submit it to our school’s Administration Office. We will input the data online for you. The registration fee for manual registration is $70. Hardcopies of the application form may be obtained at our School’s Administration Office.

      - You may submit your application online at any one of the terminals made available in the School’s Administration Office during the admissions exercise. The registration fee will remain at $50.

For PSLE phase (only year 1), you may submit your application online at the terminal made available in the School’s Administration Office during the admissions exercise. The registration is free.

Questions 4 to 11 are applicable only to Year 1 and Year 3 Phase 1.

4.    When do I have to submit the supporting documents to NUS High School?

        Supporting documents are to be submitted, where necessary and only after the applicant has been shortlisted for the Math & Science Camp. As supporting documents are non-returnable, the applicant is advised to provide only certified true copies of original documents.

 

5.     What will the Selection Test be based on?
The Selection Test will assess the understanding and application of mathematics and science that have been taught in schools. There will also be general knowledge questions to assess how widely read students are in the fields of mathematics and the sciences. 

 

6.     Where will the Selection Test be held at?
For Year 1 admission, the selection test will be held in different test centers. Applicants will be given the option to choose the test center during registration (after payment is made). For Year 3 admission, the selection test will be held in NUS High School of Mathematics and Science.  

 

7.     What model of calculator is allowed in the Year 3 Selection Test?
Please note that no calculators are allowed for both Year 1 & Year 3. 

 

8.     What if I am unable to sit for the test?
Applicants who have registered but are unable to sit for the test because of official engagement (e.g. school competition, public performance) will have to write in to the Principal at least one week in advance, and the application will be dealt with on a case by case basis.  

 

9.     When will I be informed if I am shortlisted for the Camp (Yr 1)?
Applicants who are shortlisted for the Math & Science Camp will be informed by 16 Jul 09. The Camp, applicable only in Phase 1, will be held for 1 day on 25 Jul 2009 from morning 8:00am to 5:30pm.

 

10.  When will I be informed if I am shortlisted for the Interview (Yr 3)?
Applicants who are shortlisted for the Interview will be informed by 27 Jul 2009. The Interview will be held on 1 Aug 2009.

 

11.  What is assessed during the Math & Science camp?
During the Camp, we look for qualities including problem solving abilities, passion & motivation, independence, creativity, communication & teamwork.

 

       Questions 12 to 15 are applicable only to Year 1 Phase 2.

 

12.  Is NUSHS participating in S1-posting exercise?

        No. NUSHS does not participate in the S1-posting. We have our own PSLE online registration system. You can opt to participate in the S1-posting AND our own PSLE online registration at the same time.

 

13.  If I have been selected under Phase 1, am I still eligible for the S1-posting exercise? Can I change my mind?

No. You are not eligible for the S1-posting anymore. However, you have the liberty to make your own choice.

 

14 My child went through the DSA test and camp but was not selected.  Will the DSA performance still be taken into consideration in Phase 2?

                No. Shortlisting of applicants will solely be based on the PSLE performance.

 

       15.  What is the cut-off point for PSLE phase?

                The cut-off point for the PSLE phase varies each year. In year 2008, the cut-off point was 260.

 

       16.   Is EESIS applicable in NUSHS?

                Yes. EESIS is awarded to students who are admitted to all independent schools, based on their PSLE results.

 

17.  How would I know if I am accepted by NUS High School?

For Phase 1, successful applicant will be notified and given a Letter of Offer after the Math & Science Camp by 21 Aug 2009.

 

For Phase 2, successful applicant will be notified and given a Letter of Offer on 14 Dec 2009.
