Sir Alexander Fleming was born on 6 August 1881 in East Aryshire, Scotland and passed away when he was 74 on 11 March 1955. Fleming was a biologist and pharmacologist. His major contributions to science are the discovery of the enzyme lysozyme in 1922 and the antibiotic penicillin in 1928. His latter contribution is one of milestones in the development of modern medicine and the antibotic has saved millions of lives even till today.

Fleming’s discovery of penicillin was chanced upon rather by accident! After a long holiday, he returned to his lab to discover that many of his bacterial culture dishes were contaminated with a fungus. He then threw the dishes in disinfectant. When he returned to the dishes later, he noticed that for some of the dishes that were not submerged, there was zone around the invading fungus where the bacteria could not seem to grow. Fleming proceeded to isolate an extract from the mould, identified it as being from the Penicillium genus, and thus named the agent penicillin. Although Fleming was the first to isolate the chemical, the eventual development of penicillin to a usable drug was made possible through the efforts of chemists Ernst Chain and Howard Florey from Oxford University. Fleming was modest about his part in the development of penicillin, describing his fame as the "Fleming Myth" and he praised Florey and Chain for transforming the laboratory curiosity into a practical drug. In 1945, they were awarded the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine for their work on penicillin.
